History
In 1988 Tessa Jowell, now an MP, and Professor Marion Barnes from The University of Birmingham received funding to research the concerns of carers.
A citywide consultation revealed 17 points for officers from the Local Authority to work on with carers.
Two City Centre Forums were set up (1 on a morning and 1 on an evening) with Birmingham City Council Officers in attendance to respond to Carers and their concerns directly.
Many issues raised by Carers at these Forums were successfully resolved.
A Service User and Carers Centre was opened at Milton Grange in Handsworth Wood and this service is still in operation today.
In 1989 Birmingham Carers Association was established with the aim of representing the views of local carers and to help ensure that they have access to the best possible services from the Local Authority and the NHS.
In July 2006 Birmingham City Council opened a Carers Centre at 130 Colmore Row opposite the Council House.
This is where Birmingham Carers Association is now based.
